Wyeth, the manufacturer of Premarin and Prempro has been ordered to pay $134.5 million to three women who contended that these hormone replacement drugs caused their breast cancer.

Late Wednesday, a jury in Reno, Nevada returned its verdict in favor of the plaintiffs, who took the medications to offset menopausal symptoms. Each of the women developed breast cancer, and stopped taking the medications. The verdict, the largest to date against Wyeth, is considered a huge victory for victims of these medications, as other cases have resulted in verdicts in favor of the pharmaceutical giant or have been dismissed prior to trial. Wyeth, who faces more than 5,000 similar lawsuits across the country, declined to comment on the verdict.
